Shoulder Replacement Surgery

If all other non-surgical shoulder pain treatment methods have been unsuccessful, a shoulder replacement surgery may be prescribed. A full shoulder replacement can be a highly beneficial surgical procedure for the treatment of advanced shoulder arthritis, and at times for the treatment of a severe shoulder injury. The expert team of surgeons at Banner Health are here to ensure you get the best treatment possible for your pain or injury.

What Is Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged humeral head (or “ball joint”) is removed and replaced with a metal ball, and smooth plastic pieces replace the glenoid (or “socket”). Partial shoulder replacement may be performed for a shoulder fracture, which only includes the replacement of the ball joint.

What Conditions Require Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

There are a number of conditions that can cause shoulder pain or loss of mobility that may create a need for a partial or full shoulder replacement. Often times only severe degeneration or injury will require a surgical procedure.

Osteoarthritis– An age-related condition caused by several years of wear on the cartilage that cushions the shoulder bones.

Rheumatoid Arthritis– A disease that causes inflammation and thickening of the shoulder joint that damages cartilage often leads to pain and immobility.

Rotator Cuff Tear——严重撕裂的肌肉和肌腱shoulder causing pain, and at times may lead to arthritis or damage to the shoulder joint cartilage.

Avascular Necrosis– A condition that causes a loss of blood to the bones that can lead to joint damage and pain.

Severe Fractures– Damage and breaks to the upper portion of the arm bone, this may also lead to interruption of the blood flow among other possible complications.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery Recovery

It generally takes up to eight weeks to fully recover from surgical procedures. It may also be several months before full strength and mobility are restored but pain should subside very quickly after surgery.

Physical therapyis highly recommended and following a home exercise routine will be crucial in restoring strength in the shoulder and surrounding areas.

In most cases, gently resuming daily activities will be possible in two to six weeks. It can be approximately 6 months before high impact activities such as golf or swimming can be done.
