Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Practice Surgical Oncology Fellowship

The Banner MD Anderson Advanced Practice Surgical Oncology Fellowship is a 13-month program providing high level surgical training and specialty specific knowledge to allow the advanced practice provider (APP) fellow to function at the top of their scope of practice upon completion of the program.

This position will allow the APP fellow to gain exposure to various aspects of multidisciplinary care and the functions of a complex health care delivery system. The fellow will be provided many different opportunities to develop and identify specific skills and knowledge as directly related to surgical oncology, perioperative management and comprehensive oncologic care.

Program Objectives

This fellow is a member of a care team that provides and coordinates medical, surgical, and other specialty care to patients under the auspices of a supervising physician or the supervising physician’s agent in various settings. The fellow will help provide patient assessment through patient exams, patient medical history, interpretation of required diagnostic procedures, and developing/implementing treatment and management plans under the supervising physician and supervising physician’s agent. Successful completion of the fellowship program will be awarded a certificate by Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Department of Surgical Oncology.

Program Curriculum

The surgical oncology fellowship provides exposure to many different subspecialties within the oncologic surgery realm. Each rotation will have a clinical and didactic component with over 2000 mentored hours in direct patient care. While BMDACC is focused on cancer care, the fellow will also gain exposure to some non-oncologic cases as well. Subspecialty surgical rotations will include: breast, colorectal, hepatopancreatobiliary, skin & soft tissue, head & neck, urology, gynecologic oncology, thoracic and complex reconstructive surgery.

The last 8 weeks of the program will culminate in a subspecialty area of the fellows choosing to allow them to continue to refine their knowledge in their area of interest.

In addition to rotating through the core surgical oncology specialties, additional exposure to various specialties will include but are not limited to Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Interventional Radiology, Integrative Medicine, and Nutrition.
